Instagram or Snapchat, Which is Better?

instagram or snapchat

A year ago, Instagram openly copied Snapchat’s main features, Stories, and ignited the competition. Over time, Instagram added the disappearing messages to its list of location notifications, advanced face filters, tags, stickers, drawing tools. Thus, Instagram eclipsed Snapchat with its daily user rate.

Instagram announced last summer that 250 million users create stories every day. In other words, more users than all Snapchat users, whose daily number of users is 166 million as of last summer, use Instagram stories.

When the rivalry between them got bigger, all we had to do was ask one question. Which app is really better?

We compared six basic features of the two applications for you;

Stories

instagram and snapchat stories

We all know now that Instagram copied the temporary “stories” concept from Snapchat. So, we tried to use a holistic perspective when examining the stories on both platforms. We looked at how effective they are for the user in general. Are stories easy to find within the app? Does it go smoothly from story to story? And does it give a sense of satisfaction to both the sharer and the viewer?

Instagram

On Instagram, we loved how stories appeared at the top. This way, as soon as we open Instagram, we see Stories at the top and we can look at them before scrolling through the feed. The fact that the stories are visible makes them more attractive to users.

The downside to Instagram stories is autoplay. When you watch people’s stories, they can see you. And this may lead you to find yourself watching your ex’s story unintentionally in the Discover stories section😊

Snapchat

We can say that Snapchat is more compassionate about autoplay. It gives us the right to choose the story whose story we want to watch or not (You can also choose the autoplay order of the stories even if they have been played in the past.)

The downside to Snapchat stories is that you have to swipe left to see them in the app. In addition, we can say that Snapchat does not motivate the user to open the application at all. The only advantage of choosing Snapchat for story sharing seems to be that we can set the duration.

Winner: Instagram

Thanks to the comfort of reaching the stories quickly, our winner in this regard is Instagram. Also disappointing is the lack of engaging content on Snapchat.

Direct Messaging

Snapchat

The disappearance of photo and video messages has been the engine of Snapchat and much longer than Instagram. Of course, older doesn’t necessarily mean better.

Snapchat has the advantage of simplicity in this area. When you send a message someone looks at it and the message disappears. Messages are also lost if you exit the conversation or close the app while messaging. It is this feature that has made Snapchat so famous over the years.

Instagram

Instagram’s direct messaging interface seems a bit complicated. It’s nice that it integrates with all the other areas to share what you like with family and friends. However, the disappearing messages added to the direct messaging part of Instagram are very duplicates 😊 Already, most users do not seem to understand which is instant and which is a permanent message.

Winner: Snapchat

Sometimes you just can’t beat simplicity.

Face Filters

Your filters sure make people look great. With Snapchat filters, it is possible to erase years from your face with one touch. It is certain that they created very popular filters with the self-confidence of being the first in this field. See the still popular dog filter.

Instagram

It is not possible to say that it copies Snapchat well in this regard, but we can say that they work well. They certainly put a lot of effort into copying Snapchat’s dog filter. (See. The dog even has hairs😊)

But its colors pale in comparison to Snapchat. Snapchat stays one step ahead with its vibrant colors and perfecting filter ratios.

Winner: Snapchat

Instagram may have come close to Snapchat with its work in this area, but it is still in second place.

Location Tagging

Instagram

One of the favorite tags of Instagram users is geotagging. We have already shared with you in our previous article that a tagging at the right time on Instagram increases the interaction by 79%. Finding Instagram’s location tag is pretty easy. It’s also a plus that it lets you choose the size of the tag when tagging in stories.

Snapchat

To reach the location tag, you must first skip the other tags. Snapchat’s large stickers that cover most of the photo are not really liked by users. The designs, on the other hand, create a sense of clumsiness instead of simplicity.

Winner: Instagram

Stickers and Photo Filters

Instagram

Instagram has over 10 filters, but light and designs seem to be limited. It is not possible to say that Instagram has reached this level yet, as the most general purpose of people in using filters is better-looking photos.

Snapchat

It is certain that there is better quality filter content than Instagram. As for labels, it seems to have stopped making the user happy.

Winner: Nobody

You can do better.

Drawing Tools

Instagram

Instagram’s drawing tools are great. The app offers three different types of pens in a wide range of colours. The tools are fast, responsive, and even without handwriting, great images can be produced. Our favorite in the neon tool.

Snapchat

The drawing tool hasn’t changed at all since the app was released. For us, the matter is closed.

Winner: Instagram

Bonus: Boomerang

Boomerang is one of the best features of Instagram. There is no Snapchat equivalent to it yet. While Boomerang was a standalone app, Instagram bought it. He added it as a feature in his own camera and it has become one of the most used features. This made the videos fun, free-spirited and more creative. Not many Instagram stories could bring such high engagement without the Boomerang feature.

Bonus: Snapchat’s AR capabilities

Snapchat is unique when using augmented reality. No one is doing that yet, and the results are both hilarious and impressive.

Overall winner: Instagram

Snapchat fans probably won’t want to hear it, but Instagram does a lot of the work Snapchat does and does it better. Plus, Instagram is an app that has the added benefit of already running a completely separate and successful business prior to the arrival of Snapchat. Any other feature Instagram adds now gives it an extra edge over the already hugely successful app. Instagram has a more sophisticated, forward-thinking design and user experience.

At the end of the day, the proof of a successful application is “How Often It is Used”.

We use Instagram almost continuously. What about Snapchat? It used to be hourly. How often do we use it these days? Maybe once a week.
